Direct Patient Access to Laboratory Test Results: What You Must Do to Comply

Approved for 0.15 CEU

On February 6, 2014, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published a final rule giving patients (or their representatives) direct access to the patient’s laboratory test results. The final rule amends the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA ’88) regulations by allowing laboratories to provide such access when requested. The rule also pre-empts state laws that limit an individual’s access to completed laboratory test reports.

The new regulations became effective on April 7, 2014, and the deadline for compliance is October 6, 2014.

This webinar was held to learn:

  • When patients have the right to directly access their laboratory test results
  • Who is a "covered entity" under HIPAA
  • How to comply with HIPAA and CLIA when providing laboratory test results to patients
  • Penalties for non-compliance
  • Which agency oversees this requirement
  • How to demonstrate compliance with the new Patient Access rules
