PBT(AAB) – Phlebotomy Technician
To be certified as PBT(AAB) – Phlebotomy
Technician – an individual must meet one (1) of the following
requirements:

Be a high school graduate (or equivalent),
AND
Complete within the last 5 years a phlebotomy
training school program accredited by an accreditation agency
recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or a phlebotomy
program approved by the California Department of Health Services
or any other state approved agency acceptable to the Board,
AND
Successfully complete a minimum of 100 venipunctures and 25 skin
punctures, AND
Pass the AAB
Board of Registry’s phlebotomy certification examination.
OR
-
Be a high school graduate (or equivalent),
AND
Complete within
the last 5 years an acceptable phlebotomy training program
consisting of a minimum of
– 40 clock hours of classroom
instruction/training that includes anatomy and physiology of the
circulatory system; specimen collection processing, and
handling; and appropriate safety, quality control, and
administrative functions for phlebotomists;
AND
– 40 clock
hours of practical training/instruction;
AND
Successfully complete a minimum of 100 venipunctures and 25 skin
punctures, AND
Pass the AAB
Board of Registry’s phlebotomy certification examination.
OR
-
Be a high school graduate (or equivalent),
AND
Complete within the last five years a minimum of
6 months (1040 clock hours) of full time work experience as a
phlebotomist in a CLIA-regulated laboratory,
AND
Successfully complete a minimum of 100
venipunctures and 25 skin punctures,
AND
Pass the AAB
Board of Registry’s phlebotomy certification examination.
In addition,
individuals qualifying under this route must also obtain one
year of acceptable full-time experience in the applicable
technical disciplines.
Note:
Passing the AAB Board of Registry’s MT, MLT, or POLT certifying
examinations will be accepted in lieu of the AAB Board of Registry’s
phlebotomy examination. However, certifying or licensure
examinations for other health care occupations (e.g., RN, LPN) are
not acceptable substitutes for the AAB Board of Registry’s
phlebotomy examination.Copyright
