Certification Standards for Embryology Laboratory Director (ELD)


To be eligible for certification as an Embryology Laboratory Director (ELD), an applicant must fulfill one of the following requirements:

  1. Hold an earned doctoral degree (Ph.D. or M.D/D.O.) from an accredited institution (see rule 10 under General Regulations) with a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science as the major subject and have successfully completed 32 semester hours (minimum) in chemistry or the biological sciences acceptable to the Board.

AND

Have a minimum of two years of experience on human specimens directing or supervising embryology testing in an embryology laboratory. This experience must include 60 personally performed, completed assisted reproductive procedures in humans administered under current standards of care.

AND

Pass ABB’s examinations in Embryology Laboratory Administration and Embryology.

OR

  1. Hold an earned master's degree from an accredited institution (see rule 10 under General Regulations) with a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science as the major subject and have successfully completed 32 semester hours (minimum) in chemistry or the biological sciences acceptable to the Board.

AND

Have directed an embryology laboratory prior to July 20, 1999.

AND

Have a minimum of three years of experience on human specimens directing or supervising embryology testing in an embryology laboratory. This experience must include 60 personally performed, completed assisted reproductive procedures in humans administered under current standards of care.

AND

Pass ABB’s examinations in Embryology Laboratory Administration and Embryology.

OR

  1. Hold an earned bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (see rule 10 under General Regulations) with a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science as the major subject and have successfully completed 32 semester hours (minimum) in chemistry or the biological sciences acceptable to the Board.

AND

Have directed an embryology laboratory prior to July 20, 1999.

AND

Have a minimum of four years of experience on human specimens directing or supervising embryology testing in an embryology laboratory. This experience must include 60 personally performed, completed assisted reproductive procedures in humans administered under current standards of care.

AND

Pass ABB’s examinations in Embryology Laboratory Administration and Embryology.
