About the AAB Board of Registry (ABOR)

Certification for professional medical technologists, laboratory technicians,
physician office laboratory technicians and phlebotomy technicians

The Board of Registry of the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) is an independent, autonomous, credentialing agency organized in 1962 as the Accrediting Commission of the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technology (ISCLT).

Primary Purpose

The primary purpose of the AAB Board of Registry is to identify, on a non-discriminatory basis, those individuals who meet the minimum requirements for certification as an MT(AAB) – Medical Technologist; MLT(AAB) – Medical Laboratory Technician; EMA(AAB) Environmental Microbiology Analyst; POLT(AAB) – Physician Office Laboratory Technician; and PBT(AAB) – Phlebotomy Technician. These requirements do not discriminate against any individual or group of individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, or source of national origin.

Eleven of the twelve states that license MTs and MLTs recognize the AAB Board of Registry examinations.  These states include California, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, Hawaii, Montana, Louisiana, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

Note that passing the AAB Board of Registry’s examinations may not be the only requirement for licensure in these states.  Individuals must also meet the state’s educational, training, experience, and continuing education requirements to qualify for state licensure.

The twelfth state, New York, is still developing its licensure program.

MT(AAB), MLT(AAB), EMA(AAB), POLT(AAB), AND PBT(ABB) CREDENTIALS

The AAB Board of Registry recognizes individuals at the following levels within the clinical laboratory field:

The primary difference between the MT(AAB), MLT(AAB), and POLT(AAB) certifications is one of responsibility and supervisory capabilities in the laboratory. The MT(AAB) (medical technologist) performs tests, including high complexity procedures, with a minimum of supervision.  An MT(AAB) may supervise MLT(AAB)s (medical laboratory technicians), POLT(AAB)s (physician office laboratory technicians), and PBT(AAB)s (phlebotomy technicians). MLT(AAB)s perform waived and moderately complex clinical laboratory procedures under the supervision of a laboratory director, supervisor, or MT(AAB). The POLT(AAB) performs a limited number of waived or moderately complex clinical laboratory procedures in physician office and alternate-site laboratories under the supervision of a laboratory director, supervisor, MT(AAB) or MLT(AAB).  The PBT(AAB) performs venipunctures, fingersticks, and other procedures to procure a blood specimen for laboratory testing.
