Focusing on the andrology laboratory, the workshop agenda includes topics such as vital parameters of a semen analysis, quality assurance, proficiency testing, safety guidelines, qualifications needed to perform a semen analysis, and CLIA regulations. This hands-on workshop will allow the participants to develop consistent techniques and protocols necessary to complete a basic semen analysis.
The workshop will include live lectures, multi-media presentations, a practical laboratory training session, and interactive discussions. The program will start with a quick review of the male reproductive system, male gametogenesis and environmental factors that can affect male fertility. The steps involved in a routine semen analysis as well as possible issues that can interfere with the analysis of the samples will also be presented. There will be an opportunity to discuss which parameters are vital to a semen analysis and review the current World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines (4th and 5th editions). Participants will have the chance to share their experiences and discuss topics such as the validity of azoospermia and the value of a sperm survival test.
A list of equipment & supplies and protocols will be provided with the course syllabus.
