Application for ABB Certification

Certification Standards For General Supervisor (GS)

To be eligible for certification as a General Supervisor, an applicant must be qualified as a General Supervisor under the CLIA ’88 regulations, Subpart M, Section 493.1461, or fulfill one of the following requirements:

  1. Hold an earned doctoral*, master's, or bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (see rule 11 under General Regulations) with a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science as the major subject and one (1) year of documented experience within the ten (10) years immediately prior to the application date on human specimens in high complexity testing in an acceptable clinical laboratory. OR
  1. Have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (see rule 11 under General Regulations) in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, and have at least one (1) year of laboratory training or experience within the ten (10) years immediately prior to the application date on human specimens, or a combination of both, in high complexity testing. OR
  1. Hold an earned associate degree from an accredited institution (see rule 11 under General Regulations) in a laboratory science and two (2) years of acceptable clinical laboratory experience within the ten (10) years immediately prior to the application on human specimens. OR
  1. Have previously qualified or could have qualified as a general supervisor under 42 CFR 493.1427 of the federal Medicare/CLIA regulations published March 14,1990, (55 FR 9538) as amended on July 22, 1993, except that the required six (6) years of experience must have been within the ten (10) years prior to the date of application.AND
  1. Pass ABB’s general supervisor examination.

 

*Must include 32 hours (minimum) in chemistry or the biological sciences acceptable to the Board.

** Includes HHS Proficiency Examination plus six (6) years of experience. At least two (2) years (of the six [6]) must have been spent working in the designated laboratory specialty.

NOTE: If you are applying for a Florida Supervisor’s license, ABB’s General Supervisor (GS) exam can be used in lieu of Florida’s required 25 hours of Board-approved continuing education in supervision and administration. However, if you obtain 25 hours of Board-approved continuing education in supervision and administration and are interested in obtaining ABB’s GS certification, you must still apply, and if approved, take and pass ABB’s General Supervisor examination.
